The healing and cleansing powers of the thermal waters of Bagno Vignoni were highly prized by the Etruscans and later on by aristocratic Romans. Famous guests in history include Lorenzo The Magnificent, Saint Catherine and even Pope Pius II. The small thermal location with great bathing traditions was a welcome resting place on the medieval pilgrim's route the"Via Francigena" that once led from Canterbury to Rome. In 1994 this route was declared a European Cultural Route by the European Institute of Cultural Routes.
